Your Body.
Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate. While it's more common in women over 50, younger women can and do get breast cancer too. Unfortunately, early detection rates are lower in younger individuals because they’re often not seen as “high risk” by healthcare providers. But catching breast cancer early is key—it significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.
Our family has compiled a list of Athens-area locations and providers of Breast Cancer screenings to discuss with your doctor. Know of one we missed? Email us at kellis.light.legacy@gmail.com

Know Your Body, Know the Signs
You know your body better than anyone. If you notice any unusual changes, such as lumps, pain, or changes in shape or size, don’t dismiss them. These signs might not always point to breast cancer, but they should never be ignored. Regular self-exams and understanding the early symptoms are your first defense.
Sometimes, You Have to Advocate for Yourself
If you're under 40 and experiencing symptoms, you may encounter challenges when seeking a diagnosis. Sometimes, younger patients may feel dismissed or told not to worry because of their age. If you feel something isn’t right, trust your instincts. Be persistent. Request further testing, such as mammograms, ultrasounds, or biopsies, and don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. Your health matters.
Why Early Detection Matters
When breast cancer is found early, before it has spread, the 5-year survival rate is 99%. Early detection through regular screenings and listening to your body can make all the difference in your treatment options and outcomes.
Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen—act as soon as you notice anything unusual. Early action can save your life.
